According to a survey by Opodo, a large percentage of German travellers choose their holiday destination with inspiration taken from social media.
In fact, according to the survey, social media plays a decisive role in 32% of Germans when choosing their holiday destination. The survey also revealed that 52% of 18-24 year olds have already discovered travel destinations through social media and have taken dream holidays there. In contrast, only 12% of the over 65s are influenced by attractive photos and videos on Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms.
Interestingly, 24% of German travellers look to share the best moments of their trip online in order to “lock in” their positive memories as a keepsake. Similarly, 38% post from their holidays in order to preserve pleasant travel memories, and 16% said they post online to inspire their followers to discover new and exciting places.
23% choose to keep their holiday moments completely private and don’t post photos from their holidays online at all, and 5% admit to not posting anything because they don’t actually want their social media followers to know that part of their life.
32% of holidaymakers don’t mention anything negative on social media even if they had a bad experience, because they want to avoid being labelled “grumpy”. 35% don’t mention anything negative because they don’t want to ruin the holiday feeling for others.
The statistics are based on a survey conducted by OnePoll between April 5th and April 16th 2024. The survey was conducted amongst 9,000 people worldwide, including 1,000 Germans who have taken a holiday abroad in the last five years.
