The global travel landscape appears to be shifting, with travelers increasingly moving away from overcrowded hotspots and turning instead to more authentic and peaceful experiences. In this new reality, quiet destinations in Greece are emerging as clear winners.
According to a study by UK-based villa rental company Solmar Villas, published by Euronews, seven of the world’s top ten destinations for relaxing holidays in 2026 are located in Greece. At the top of the ranking is Alonissos, confirming the rising appeal of lesser-known Greek islands and mainland regions that offer tranquility, nature, and authenticity.
Alonissos scored 30.5 out of 40, followed closely by Kefalonia with 30.4 and the Peloponnese with 30.3. The top five is completed by Skopelos and Lefkada, while the top ten also includes Mani, Naxos, and Paxos.
The dominance of Greek destinations is striking. In a global list of more than 160 destinations, Greece occupies most of the highest positions, outperforming internationally renowned but heavily crowded locations such as Santorini, Ibiza, and Hawaii.
The rise of slow tourism
The findings reflect a broader transformation in global travel behavior. Overcrowding, rising costs, and the loss of authenticity in many popular destinations are pushing travelers toward a new philosophy known as slow tourism.
Rather than rushing through multiple destinations, travelers increasingly prefer to stay longer in one place, connect with local culture, and enjoy a slower, more meaningful pace of travel. In this context, quiet destinations in Greece are gaining a strong competitive advantage.
How the destinations were ranked
The study by Solmar Villas analyzed more than 160 destinations worldwide. Each location was evaluated across eight categories, with a maximum possible score of 40 points.
Key criteria included visitor density, climate comfort, natural environment quality, and overall pace of life. Additional factors included travel cost, safety, accessibility, and wellness offerings such as yoga, hiking, spa facilities, and healthy local cuisine.
Natural landscape quality played a major role in the ranking, with pristine beaches, protected areas, and access to marine parks significantly improving scores. Destinations with a slower, more traditional lifestyle consistently ranked higher than mass-tourism resorts.
Greece at the center of a new travel era
Greece’s dominance in the ranking is not accidental. It reflects a structural shift in global demand toward destinations that prioritize authenticity, nature, and quality of experience over mass tourism.
From Alonissos to Paxos and from Skopelos to Mani, the Greek destinations featured in the ranking share a common profile: they are less commercialized, deeply connected to nature, and offer a genuine sense of escape from fast-paced modern life.
This emerging “geography of calm” positions Greece not just as a beneficiary of the slow tourism trend, but as one of its defining leaders.
