Greece is one of the top destinations chosen by visitors from major European countries. This is the result of a recent study conducted by the Hellenic Association of Tourism Enterprises (INSEETE) entitled “The Greek Brand: How attractive is Greece as a tourist destination? What is the image of Greece as a tourist destination?
Specifically, Greece is among the top 5 destinations for Germans, British and French for their holidays abroad in the next 12 months. It should be noted that the first part of the study examines the markets of Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Spain.
Greece as stable as last year
The Germans and French rank Greece 3rd and 4th respectively in terms of preferred destinations for the next 12 months. For the British, it is also in the top 5, in 5th place, although it has slipped two places.
According to official data from the Bank of Greece, these three countries will account for 42% of Greece’s total inbound tourism receipts in 2023.
Spanish preferences are lower
Spaniards, who account for a smaller share of arrivals and receipts in Greek tourism, ranked the country as the 7th most preferred destination for the next 12 months.
The study is based on a survey conducted by GWI in two waves in 2024 and 2023, focusing on visitors’ preferences for possible destinations in the next 12 months, including the summer months, which are crucial for Greek tourism.

Broken down by market, the top 5 countries that are likely to be visited abroad in the next 12 months are
For Germans: Italy (29.1%), Spain (28.5%), Greece (20.3%), Austria (18.4%), France (17.4%).
For the French: Spain (31,4%), Italy (21,6%), Portugal (16,6%), Greece (12,9%), Inited Kingdom (11,8%).
For the British: Spain (34.1%), Italy (22.2%), France (20.0%), USA (19.8%), Greece (19%).
For the Spaniards: Italy (29.7%), France (23.8%), Portugal (20.6%), UK. UK (15.0%), USA (11.8%).
