The new travel trend is called coolcation and is expected to hit tourism in southern European countries.
Let’s be honest, the temperatures in Greece are often impossible to bear even for Greeks who are used to heat waves knocking on our door since June.
This seems to be the reason why more and more European tourists are now choosing for their summer holidays cool destinations in Northern Europe rather than Mediterranean ones.
This particular trend derived from cool, coolness in English, and vacation, holiday, has been “christened” “Coolcation”.
The countries that are attracting more and more tourists seeking coolness are Norway and Sweden.
It is characteristic that in 2023, specifically in August, the number of overnight stays by foreigners increased by 22% in Norway, while in Sweden, the increase was 11%.
In fact, a survey for Visit Sweden conducted in Germany revealed that two out of five Germans plan to change their travel habits due to the high summer heat in southern Europe. This is forcing them to either choose seasons of the year when Mediterranean destinations are cooler or choose new destinations.
So instead of crowded Mediterranean beaches with scorching heat, many now prefer to swim in a lake or hike in the mountains. At the same time, tourists seem to be concerned about the closure at midday on the Acropolis due to high temperatures and, understandably, forest fires.
However, the forecasts for climate change are not optimistic worldwide. Typically, global temperature records have been broken for over a year now: June 2024 was the warmest ever measured, breaking the record for the corresponding month in 2023. “The average global temperature over the last 12 months, i.e. from July 2023 to June 2024, is the highest ever recorded,” the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) of the Copernicus Observatory pointed out.
