Northern England is emerging as the most popular destination for holidays within the United Kingdom in 2026, with 45% of travellers putting it at the top of their list, according to a new survey by AA Media. Southern West England follows with 41%, and Scotland with 38%.
This picture comes at a time when more Britons appear to be opting for shorter and more frequent trips within the country. According to the same survey, 37% say they are planning more leisure trips within the United Kingdom in 2026, while 56% are choosing shorter getaways more frequently.
What travellers are looking for
The survey also shows that additional spending is mainly directed towards higher-quality accommodation and eating out. 63% say they will spend more on better accommodation, while 50% say they plan to increase their budget for dining.
Coastal holidays remain the most popular type of staycation, at 55%, followed by countryside getaways at 46%. One in five, or 21%, are planning holidays in camping or caravan accommodation.
What this means for accommodation providers
For accommodation providers and hospitality professionals, the message is that demand is not disappearing, but changing form. AA Media director Simon Numphud noted that, under pressure from economic conditions, travellers are not abandoning travel, but are turning to shorter and more frequent getaways that offer value and the opportunity to discover more places closer to home.
He added that businesses able to offer good value for money without compromising on quality will be in a better position to benefit from demand for leisure travel in the United Kingdom in 2026.
The survey also highlights the role that ratings and reviews play in accommodation choices. 92% of travellers say they check official ratings or user reviews before booking, while more than half prefer to book directly through the accommodation’s website rather than through online travel platforms.
