2024 has proven to be the best tourist season for Rhodes in the history of the island, with impressive performances in all sectors. According to Fraport Greece data, August 2024 was the month with the highest ever tourist traffic for Diagoras Airport. In fact, 616,607 tourists arrived on charter flights, compared to 509,344 last year, representing a 21% increase in numbers. This increase of 107,263 visitors confirms the upward trend in tourist traffic to Rhodes.
British tourists once again were the most numerous visitors to the island, with 134,450 arrivals, followed by the Germans with 91,166 and the Poles with 44,580. The airport’s overall traffic, which includes domestic and international flights, increased significantly, reaching a total of 1,264,300 passengers, recording a 16.9% increase compared to August 2023.
From January to August 2024, a total of 4,885,541 passengers passed through Rhodes Airport, an increase of 13.4% compared to the same period last year. The number of flights also increased by 9.7%, with the total number of domestic and international flights reaching 32,731, up 8.7% compared to the previous year.
The increase in tourist traffic in Rhodes is not only limited to air arrivals, but also extends to maritime tourism. To date, the island has welcomed 261,646 cruise ship passengers, with October expected to break all previous records, as 59 cruise ship calls are planned, more than any other single month. At the same time, a 25% increase in yachting calls is boosting alternative marine tourism, which is a major growth driver for the island.
Extended tourist season in Rhodes
Rhodes is also looking forward to the expansion of the tourist season, with the first tourists from new markets, such as China and India are expected in November this year. At the same time, the Deputy Mayor of Culture-Tourism of the municipality of Rhodes, George Topos, announced that actions are being considered to approach markets from Asia, South Korea, Bahrain and America, with the aim of increasing tourist traffic.
This year’s successful tourist season for Rhodes, which is also due to the increase in repeat visitors, confirms the island’s steady upward trend as a top tourist destination, while the planning and promotional activities for alternative forms of tourism, such as gastronomic, cultural and conference tourism, promise even greater diversity and variety in the coming years.
Rhodes, taking advantage of its benefits and aiming to extend the tourist season, will celebrate World Tourism Day with a three-day event, strengthening its position on the world tourism map.
