In an attempt to address and improve the quality of life for residents in Barcelona, it has been decided that amongst other things, the fee for the tourist buses to park in the city centre will quadruple from €20 to €80.
Records show that in 2023, there were over 156,000 stops in the 222 allocated parking spaces for tourist buses in Barcelona. Around 69,000 boarding and alighting points, leaving room for 87,000 parking spaces. This generated revenue for the municipal coffers of almost €1 million and this amount is now expected to exceed €4 million.
The effort also includes a proposal to reduce parking spaces in the city centre, the implementation of a parking platform at the entrances of the city, and the use of technology to predict and organise visitor flows.
The aim is to reduce the number of visitors on day trips to the city.
In a statement, the deputy mayor of finance and tourism, Jordi Valls, said that a tourist staying overnight in Barcelona pays around €7, while another visiting the city for a full day pays just €0.5 despite also making extensive use of public spaces.
Meanwhile, an increase in the maximum overnight tax, a plan to eliminate all housing for short-term rentals and a bid to restrict cruising were also announced in Barcelona.
