The platform’s strategy may be shifting with Airbnb’s new 20% discount test, which directly links pricing to search ranking. This move signals a possible turn toward loyalty-style models, reminiscent of Booking.com’s Genius program, opening new considerations for hosts and the wider market.
The offer is clear:
Hosts fully fund the discount for a limited period in exchange for increased visibility, a special badge, display of the original crossed-out price, and promotion to “top” guests.
In simple terms, it’s a trade-off: lower average daily rate (ADR) for greater exposure.
Airbnb Loyalty Program: A new direction for the platform
During the Q4 2025 earnings announcement, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky confirmed that the company is experimenting with loyalty elements. For years, Airbnb avoided traditional reward programs: there were no tiers, no “elite” discounts, and no official guest status.
This new message indicates that the company’s strategy may be evolving.
Airbnb vs Booking Genius: How the two models compare
The reference to Booking.com’s Genius program is deliberate. Genius is the most successful loyalty program in the alternative accommodation sector. Over the years, it has boosted repeat bookings, categorized guests, increased conversion rates, and established the “discount for visibility” practice.
Genius has become a structural element of Booking’s market, even influencing pricing expectations in multiple markets. Airbnb does not yet have an equivalent.
Genius requires official enrollment, has a permanent minimum discount, and ongoing participation. In contrast, Airbnb’s current test involves selected hosts, applies to specific listings, is time-limited, and requires no official sign-up.
However, it uses the same financial lever: reduced margin in exchange for higher ranking.
Who qualifies as “Top Guests”?
On Airbnb, eligible guests are those with ratings of 4.8+ and at least three reviews—a behavior- and reputation-based approach. On Booking, Genius eligibility is based on booking frequency and tiered levels (Level 1–3). Different philosophy, similar ranking logic.
This is not a new listing discount
Airbnb already offers an automatic 20% discount for new listings until they receive three reviews—a solution to the “cold start problem.” The new test applies to established listings and directly ties pricing to ranking, signaling a different goal and message to the market.
Airbnb search ranking and pricing strategy
Until now, Airbnb ranking was largely based on performance metrics. Introducing a financial contribution as a ranking factor changes the dynamics. If expanded, this model could normalize visibility being increasingly tied to how much margin a host is willing to sacrifice.
For now, this is a limited test. But Genius’ experience shows how quickly such practices can become structural features of a platform.
Airbnb does not yet have its own “Genius,” but if it moves in that direction, ranking may no longer be solely a matter of quality—it could also become a matter of pricing strategy.
