As summer approaches and American holiday getaways increase, Airbnb is bringing back its “smart” party prevention technology for the fourth year in a row, aiming to enhance safety and accountability in short-term rentals for Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends.
It is a proprietary technology designed to identify and prevent high-risk bookings, drastically reducing the chances of disruptive parties – a practice that is explicitly prohibited on Airbnb’s platform.
How the technology works
Airbnb’s “anti-party” system evaluates various factors in order to block bookings that are deemed unsafe. These include:
- the length of stay (mainly bookings for 1-2 nights),
- the type of accommodation (whole house),
- the distance of the accommodation from the visitor’s home address,
- the extent to which the reservation is made at the last minute.
If a reservation is rejected on the basis of these parameters, the visitor will be able to choose alternative accommodation outside the scope of the technology.
Report and results
In 2024, this system prevented around 51,000 users in the US from making high-risk reservations during the two major summer holidays. To illustrate, 7,750 reservations were prevented in Texas, 7,400 in Florida and 7,030 in California – states with increased tourist traffic and higher risk for incidents.
Although, according to Airbnb, incidents of disruptive parties are rare, the company is constantly investing in new tools and policies to further curb these types of abuses. As noted, since 2020 – when a universal ban on partying was imposed globally – there has been a more than 50% decrease in the rate of party reports in the US. In 2024, just 0.06% of bookings resulted in a report.
Beyond technology: Tools and support for hosts
Airbnb’s approach is not limited to prevention through automation. The platform offers a broader set of tools and support infrastructure for hosts and local communities, including:
- Guidance for hosts on how to prevent parties in their accommodation.
- A helpline for neighbourhoods, through which residents can report emergencies such as a party in progress.
- A 24/7 security hotline for hosts and guests to instantly contact Airbnb’s dedicated security team.
- Free noise sensors, allowing for early intervention without compromising guest privacy.
- Dedicated support channel to authorities, to manage rare but serious incidents related to Airbnb accommodation.
Airbnb’s technology and measures are part of a broader strategy of responsible hospitality and support for local communities. The goal is to ensure positive experiences for travelers, hosts and neighbors alike.
The company recognizes that holiday periods, such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, are accompanied by increased demand and, by extension, an increased risk of delinquency or noise pollution incidents. Therefore, enhanced security protocols are activated during these times.
From establishing a blanket ban on parties to developing sophisticated prevention systems, Airbnb is attempting to redefine the short-term rental model by focusing on protecting homes, calming communities and building trust with its users.
