Heraklion Airport has once again seen an increase in passenger traffic, with Crete being one of the most popular destinations in the country.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority, Heraklion State Airport (KAHK) will surpass the current historical record for passenger traffic in 2024.
Up until the end of June, the average increase in passenger traffic at KAIK was approximately 11%, and the estimate is that it will exceed 9,200,000 passengers by the end of the year, establishing KAIK as the second largest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic.
However, the growth in traffic has its downside as it exceeds the maximum nominal capacity of the airport by at least 60% during the summer months.
The Civil Aviation Authority announced that together with the Airport, they are making every effort to ensure that the old and over-saturated infrastructure, which has far exceeded its fatigue limits, is continuously maintained and modernised until the new airport at Kastelli opens in February 2027.
In the context of systematic interventions to improve the provision of services to the travelling public, the CAA, with the assistance and sponsorship of private entities and companies, as well as the Region of Crete, has undertaken a series of measures that have been implemented, such as:
- Replacement of 24 central air conditioning units.
- Replacement of two carousel belts.
- Supply of an additional ninety passenger seats.
- Complete replacement of automatic external doors
- Electronic open tender for the supply and installation of two additional air/water heat pumps with a budget of 250.000 euro.
- Interventions in the Cleaning Services Contract with an increase in the cleaning frequency rate and an increase in cleaning staff, due to the needs arising from the continuous increase in passenger traffic.
- Interventions in the ventilation of enclosed spaces.
Also, at the end of the summer season, the CAA plans to completely renovate three of the terminal’s toilet blocks, although most of the blocks are less than 10 years old, while some were renovated 2 years ago.
Regarding operational safety issues at Heraklion airport, the CAA has already undertaken the:
- Asphalt paving of 1300 metres of the main runway.
- Study and strength testing of manoeuvring area and runways.
- Supply and installation of materials for the refurbishment of the manoeuvring area photolabelling circuits, worth EUR 270 000.
- Supply and installation of materials for the restoration of corridor and taxiway signs, worth EUR 160.000.
