First impressions matter. And in the world of short-term rentals, the bed is the centerpiece of that impression. It’s not enough for a bed to simply be clean – it must be styled with care, precision, and a sense of professionalism. A properly made, hotel-style bed communicates luxury, attentiveness, and quality – essentials for any successful Airbnb property.

If you’re managing an Airbnb, a villa, or a guesthouse, investing in the way your bedroom looks is one of the smartest moves you can make. A well-made bed conveys cleanliness, freshness, and comfort – and that can directly translate to positive reviews and repeat guests.

The essentials of bed-making

Hotel-style bed-making is all about simplicity, symmetry, and cleanliness. Follow these steps for a flawless look:

• Start with a mattress covered by a mattress protector, which ensures hygiene and extends the life of your mattress.
• Use a fitted sheet or a flat sheet that fits tightly and smoothly with no wrinkles. Place a second flat sheet on top of the first – this will act as a barrier between the guest and the duvet or blanket, as is common in high-end hotels. This layering adds to the feeling of cleanliness and care.
• For perfect corners, use the “hospital corners” technique. Take the overhanging fabric on one side (e.g., the right side), lift it at a 45-degree angle towards the headboard to create a triangle, tuck the hanging sheet under the mattress, fold down the triangle and tuck it as well. Repeat on all corners. The result is a neat, envelope-style fold.

• Place the top sheet with the pattern side (if any) facing upward, so that when it is folded over at the top, the design shows correctly. Leave about 15–20 cm from the top of the mattress. Smooth it out well and tuck in the sides under the mattress, leaving the top part untucked.
• Place the duvet or the blanket on top of the top sheet. Make sure they cover the entire bed evenly. You can fold the top part of the duvet or the blanket outward, over the top sheet, for a warmer and more luxurious result.
• The pillows are the final “touch” that adds volume and luxury. Start with the larger pillows (e.g., sleeping pillows) and place them upright or leaning against the headboard. Add smaller decorative pillows in front of the sleeping pillows. You can play with patterns, textures, and colors to bring a fresh feel to your bedroom. A lumbar pillow, placed in front of all the others, offers comfort and completes the look. The rule is not to use more than 5 pillows, so the bed doesn’t look “overstuffed.”

For additional layers and elegance, add a runner (bed runner) or a quilt at the foot of the bed. This adds an extra touch of luxury and completes the hotel-style aesthetic.

Style & fabric selection

Choose high-quality fabrics such as 100% cotton or cotton sateen with a high thread count (200 TC and above). These materials feel luxurious and are more durable to frequent use and washing. White is the safest and most “hotel-like” choice, as it conveys cleanliness and neutrality. If you want to add color, do so with throw pillows, bed runners, or blankets.

Small details that make a big difference

Use fabric sprays with a neutral or fresh scent. Place a small flower or a welcome note on the pillows – it adds a warm, personal touch. If space allows, consider adding a bench at the foot of the bed or a stylish chair where guests can place their luggage.

Professional bed making on a budget

You don’t need expensive linens to achieve the “hotel look.” Even affordable brands can offer quality sheets and pillows – as long as they’re well-maintained and thoughtfully presented. Frequent washing and ironing, replacing worn-out items, and proper storage are key to maintaining a professional image.

Enhancing guest experience and bookings

Guests remember how they felt during their stay, and the bed is a central part of that experience. A comfortable, clean, and aesthetically pleasing bedroom is associated with rest, relaxation, and comfort. These positive feelings often translate into reviews, recommendations, and more bookings. Bed-making is not just a routine – it’s a statement of your hospitality.
