Bookings for sustainable vacation homes recorded a significant increase across Europe’s largest tourism markets for the 2026 summer season compared with 2020, according to data from Interhome, a company of the HomeToGo Group.
The report, which examined summer holiday bookings in Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, found that sustainable accommodations accounted for 29.5% of all summer bookings in 2025, compared with 16.7% in 2020.
Italy recorded the highest share of sustainable bookings at 40.1%, followed by Germany with 36.1%, Switzerland with 35.9%, Spain with 29.3% and France with 16.1%.
Investments in green features
According to Interhome, the largest overall increase over the past five years was recorded in recycling facilities. At the same time, electric vehicle charging infrastructure saw significant growth, particularly in France and Switzerland, while solar photovoltaic systems recorded the strongest increase in Italy and Spain.
The company attributes this trend to growing investments by vacation homeowners in sustainable infrastructure and technologies, including electric vehicle charging stations, solar photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient appliances and water-saving technologies.

“The data show that sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor in the vacation home sector,” said Interhome CEO Jörg Herrmann, announcing that the company will publish regular analyses of sustainable booking trends in order to monitor changing travel preferences across Europe.
Meanwhile, Interhome’s Head of Sustainability, Saskia Weber, noted that the findings reflect the growing investments made by property owners in sustainable features for their homes.
Interhome evaluates its properties based on a range of sustainability criteria, including the use of renewable energy sources, recycling facilities, energy-efficient heating and lighting systems, water-saving solutions and access to public transportation.
The company is expected to publish regular updates on the evolution of sustainable bookings, tracking demand trends and sustainability investments across the European vacation rental market.
