According to Eurostat data, more than 780 million overnight stays in the EU were spent in tourist accommodation in Q2 of 2024. The exact number of 780.1 million nights represented a slight increase of 0.2% compared to the same quarter of 2023.
The record however, was for total nights spent in accommodation in the EU in Q1 of the year. This number reached a record 1.2 billion nights which was a staggering +26.6 million more than in the first half of 2023.
A breakdown of overnight stays in the EU
April recorded 193.6 million overnight stays which compared to April last year was a decrease of 8.7%. May recorded a 7.9% increase with 272.1 million overnight stays, whilst things dropped slightly in June by 0.1% which equated to 314.5 million overnight stays.
Easter 2024 fell in March, whilst Easter 2023 fell in April, a fact that clearly affected the performance of short-term rentals in the second quarter of the year.
Foreign visitors (non-EU residents) accounted for aproximately half (49.0%) of all overnight stays in Q2 of 2024, with large differences in numbers between EU countries.
The highest number of nights spent by non-EU residents in Q2 was recorded in Cyprus, with 94.8%, this was followed closely by Malta with 94.7%, Croatia with 91.0% and Greece also around 90%.
In contrast, foreign visitors accounted for less than one fifth of nights spent in Poland with just 18.2%, followed by Germany with 18.7% and then Romania with 19.6%.
Compared to Q2 of 2023, the number of overnight stays by foreign visitors was up by 3.1% while overnight stays by EU citizens was actually down by 2.5%.
The largest increases in overnight stays by foreign visitors were recorded in Luxembourg with +23.8%, Malta +13.3% and Romania +10.5%.At the other end of the spectrum, the largest decreases were recorded in the Netherlands -5.7%, Austria -4.3% and then Belgium -1.9%.
For reference, hotel nights in the EU increased by 4.4 million in Q2 of 2024 (compared to the same quarter in 2023) and approached half a billion nights. The remaining 380 million overnight stays come from short-term rental accommodation and camping.
