Airbnb vs hotels, what’s the outcome for Spanish holiday makers? Well, according to research, Spanish tourists continue to prefer hotels over Airbnb which sits in a distant second place. However, demand for short-term rental accommodation is recording average annual growth of 28%, whereas demand for hotels remains stable YoY.
This finding comes from the Spain Consumer Travel Report 2024, conducted by Phocuswright.
The research firm released the key findings of the Airbnb vs hotels study on at the Phocuswright Europe 2024 conference taking place in Barcelona between the 10th – 12th June.

** Hotels remain the main choice of accommodation for Spanish holiday makers. However, this may not last for long as short-term rentals are increasing in popularity at double-digit rates year on year.
** Demand for hotels has remained stable over the last four years. Growth for short-term rentals was: +30% in 2020 (vs. 2019), +32% in 2022 and +41% in 2023.
** According to the survey the criteria for choosing accommodation when in comes to Airbnb vs hotels is the same. It all comes down to price, location and value for money.
** Star rating systems play an important role in hotel selection. Airbnb is preferred mainly for the privacy it offers, the feeling of home and positive reviews.
** In terms of direct bookings, online travel agencies are the dominant channel for booking hotels amongst Spanish travellers.
Price and ease of direct booking influence the Spanish traveller’s choice, as does the reputation of the online agency or the redemption of loyalty points.
For indirect bookings, the possibility of comparing quality and prices between hotels “counts” more.
