Tourist accommodation EU overnight stays in Q1 2024 are up 7% compared to the same quarter of 2023.
According to Eurostat data, 452.6 million nights spent in tourist accommodation via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and TripAdvisor platforms were recorded in the first quarter of this year. Previously, the Commission signed a cooperation agreement with these 4 platforms to provide the data.
EU overnight stays in Q1:
January recorded 133.9 million overnight stays (+3% compared to January 2023)
February 149.2 million (+6% compared to last year)
March 169.5 million (+9% increase)
Domestic and inbound tourism
Overnight stays by foreign visitors in the first quarter accounted for around 45% of the total, with large differences between the various EU countries.
The largest share of nights spent by foreigners in the quarter was recorded in Malta (91%), followed by Cyprus (87%), then Luxembourg (82%) and then Austria (78%).
In contrast, foreign visitors accounted for only one fifth of overnight stays in Poland, Romania and Germany (19%, 20% and 20%, respectively).
In Greece, in Q1 just over 40% of overnight stays were spent by foreign travelers.
It should be noted that the figures for Q1 2024 are favourable because the Catholic Easter holiday fell in March this year.In the first quarter of 2024, the increase in overnight stays by foreign visitors (+11% compared to the first quarter of 2023) was much stronger than the increase in overnight stays by domestic visitors (+4%).
The largest increases in overnight stays by foreign visitors were recorded in Cyprus (+23%), Croatia (+22%), Malta and Luxembourg (+21% each).
By contrast, the smallest increases were recorded in Lithuania, Poland and Greece (+3%).
In European hotels, 18 million more overnight stays were recorded in the first quarter of 2024 than in 2023, representing a +6% increase.
