Greece maintains its position as one of the most popular destinations for German tourists in 2025, according to the 41st German Tourism Analysis by the Foundation for Future Issues. Despite global economic and geopolitical challenges, Germans’ desire to travel remains unaffected, with most considering vacations an essential part of life rather than a luxury.
German tourists choose Greece – Firmly in the top 5
According to the study’s data, Greece accounts for 3.6% of German travelers’ preferences for European vacations in 2025. While Germany remains the top domestic travel choice (29%), Spain (8.1%), Italy (5.9%), Turkey (4.5%), Scandinavia (4.3%), and Greece lead the rankings at the European level.
A significant number of German travelers are still undecided, leaving room for further increases in tourism flows to Greece. About 15% of Germans state they have not yet chosen their vacation destination, waiting for better deals or more stable conditions.
Economic stability influences bookings
While Germans are ready to travel in 2025, economic uncertainty and external factors continue to play a crucial role in their decisions. Notably, over 35% of German travelers book their trips as early as possible to secure better prices and conditions. For many, planning a vacation is an integral part of the experience, providing a sense of anticipation and enjoyment.
Older travelers and those with greater financial flexibility are more likely to book early, taking advantage of early-bird discounts.
How much do German tourists spend in Greece?
The average duration of German vacations in Greece is 13.7 days, with an average expenditure of €1,701 per person in 2024, making Greece one of the most expensive European destinations after Spain (€1,843) and Scandinavia (€1,728).
Although the overall average daily travel expenditure across Europe dropped from €121 to €116 in 2024, Greece saw a corresponding decline, bringing the cost to €124 per day. This adjustment is attributed to shifts in demand and new pricing strategies implemented by the tourism sector.

Over the past decades, German travelers’ preferences have gradually shifted from Spain to other destinations such as Greece and Turkey.
