Travelers don’t just seek cultural experiences and adventure during their journeys—they often find love along the way.
This finding comes from a recent study by the European hotel chain Meininger Hotels, conducted in anticipation of Valentine’s Day.
Key insights from the study
- Over 26.2% of respondents admitted to falling in love while traveling. Interestingly, 16.4% said they found their true love.
- While not every vacation romance leads to marriage, 16.4% of travelers revealed that their holiday love affair turned into a long-term relationship, while 45.8% experienced only a short fling.
- Nearly 40% believe that travel creates a romantic atmosphere, making people more open to love. The relaxed vacation mood, openness to new experiences, and meeting like-minded individuals contribute to this phenomenon.
Where love happens
Love often blooms by the sea. The study found that 46.2% of people met their significant other during a beach holiday.
City breaks rank second with 21.8%, followed by adventure and activity-based vacations at 9.2%.
Conversely, romance seems less likely during business trips (3.8%), cruises (3.4%), or long-term work-related stays abroad.
Timing: Love at first sight?
If love is meant to happen, it usually does within the first few days. A striking 71.8% of respondents reported that romance blossomed in just a few days.
Additionally, 20.6% experienced love while en route to their destination—whether on a plane or train.
Does vacation romance last?
For 25.3%, holiday romances didn’t last long. However, most agreed that the experience was worth it.
Paris: The ultimate city of love
If you’re planning a romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day, you might want to book a trip to Paris—the ultimate city of romance, according to 32.3% of respondents.
Other top romantic destinations include Venice (20.1%) and Rome (19.9%), renowned for their enchanting ambiance and breathtaking scenery.
