Passengers will never forget the Qantas flight from Sydney to Tokyo Haneda Airport. Not because of turbulence but because of an in-flight entertainment error that resulted in just one movie being available and showing on every passenger’s screen at the same time.
The movie was officially rated “not suitable for minors” but due to a fault causing an error in the in-flight entertainment system, passengers were unable to select their own movies, resulting in the crew selecting one to be shown simultaneously on all seatbacks.
“Daddio”, a 2023 movie starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn was selected, however, it contains sexual content and explicit references to sex acts. “Daddio” is rated R in the United States, meaning “not suitable for under 18s”.
The company’s mistake with the in-flight entertainment lasted a full 40 minutes with passengers unable to change or pause the movie due to the technical issue in the entertainment system. This understandably led to angry reactions, especially from passengers travelling with children.
Qantas apologise for the in-flight entertainment
“The movie was clearly not suitable for viewing throughout the flight and we sincerely apologise to customers for this experience,” a Qantas spokesperson said. The airline confirmed that, for the remainder of the flight, a family-friendly movie was shown on all screens, as is the case when such technical issues arise. Qantas is currently investigating how the “Daddio” movie was inadvertently selected.
