Australians and Americans, the most open-minded
** Australians on holiday really go all out on having a good time. The average Australian spends $3,078 when holidaying abroad. This is almost double the amount the average Brit spends, $1,157.
The increased spending is attributed to the fact that the average salary in Australia is among the highest of any OECD country.
The most popular overseas travel destinations chosen by Australians are New Zealand and Indonesia.
** US travellers spend more when holidaying abroad than any other North American country.
As one of the world’s wealthiest countries, it is no surprise that the US tops the ranking of countries whose citizens spend the most on foreign travel. The average travel expenditure of Americans is $1,323 when holidaying abroad.
Americans spend the most on food, hotels and package tours. They also tend to tip the most. They are often accompanied on their trips by loved ones.
Icelanders and Portuguese, the first in Europe
** Iceland is at the top of the European holidaymakers’ spending ranking. The average Icelander spends $2,470 on a holiday abroad.
Iceland boasts the second highest average salary of any EU country, meaning a local worker is likely to have more disposable income during a holiday.
The typical Icelander also enjoys a total of 38 days of holiday per year, 24 days of annual leave by government decision, plus 14 official holidays.
** Portugal comes in second place with the average spend around $2,166, and the advantage of 32 days of annual leave. The top international destinations for Portuguese holidaymakers include Paris, London and Amsterdam. The United Kingdom ranks in 11th place, with nationals spending $1,157 on average.
Asians spend a lot when holidaying abroad
