Easily accessible destinations by car are chosen by Greeks travelling within the country, while the top three foreign travel destinations for Greeks are Italy, Germany and France.
This data comes from the INSETE study “How Greeks travel“, which collected online survey answers from a sample of 35,000 plus Greek residents aged between 16-64 years old.
According to the study, international travel is dominated by city trips with these urban city breaks making up 50%. On the contrary, domestic travel is dominated by sea/beach holidays representing 45%. Touring is the second most common type of travel with 32%, this figure is comprised of domestic and international touring numbers.
The top options
The most popular foreign destinations for Greek travellers are Italy (17%), Germany (11%) and France (9%) with business trips having a larger share of foreign trips than domestic trips.
In terms of domestic travel within Greece, the most popular were Attica and Central Greece-Euboea (21%), Macedonia (19%) and then the Peloponnese (14%).
Leisure travel
The study also analyses the reasons why Greeks travel, the main reason for travelling both abroad and at home is for leisure, this was around 60% of responses, visiting friends and relatives was the second most popular reason why at 18%. In terms of business purposes, including conferences, these are proportionally more important reasons for travelling abroad (14%) than for travelling domestically (11%). Very small percentages travel for medical or other purposes.
Accommodation
Hotels remain the preferred type of accommodation for domestic trips at 52% and 64% for international trips, while the share of short-term rentals is also significant with domestic figures around 22% and international figures around 16%. Similar to short-term rentals figures are the percentages for hospitality at 21% and 15% respectively.
In terms of hotel category, the percentage of 4* and 5* is significantly higher for international trips at 40% and 15% whist domestic trips account for 35% of 4* stays, with 12% being 5*.
In terms of Short Term Rental Platforms, they are used in 33% of international trips compared to 20% of domestic trips.
Good food is a priority
Is food fun? The answer when referring to Greek travellers is, yes.
The most popular activity on domestic trips is comsuming food and drink (64%). This is followed by relaxing (62%), followed by enjoying nature and the natural environment (36%), then swimming and sunbathing (25%).
With the exception of food and drink (57%), the most popular activities for international travel are quite diverse. Consequently, the most popular activity is sightseeing (61%), followed by eating and drinking (57%), followed by visiting museums/exhibitions (45%), shopping/shopping (37%) and enjoying the city (35%).
How do the Greeks travel
The mode of travel differs significantly between domestic and international travel.
Domestic travel is dominated by land transport with 74% of which 80% is by car, 14% by bus and 3% by train, followed by sea 16% and only 10% of domestic trips are by air. By contrast, international travel is dominated by air travel 72%, followed by land travel 23%, then by car at 56%, then bus 26%, train by 7% , motorbike accounts for 8% and only 5% of trips are made by sea.
Via internet the information
The old tactic of “word of mouth” no longer dominates in informing Greeks about their choice of destination.
The internet is the main source of information (65% for international travel and 57% for domestic travel), followed by information from friends and acquaintances (36% and 31%).
Travel agencies play an important role for international trips 17%, compared to only 8% for domestic trips, while for 19% of domestic trips a specific source was not used, compared to 8% for international trips.
On line the reservations
Greek travelers mostly reserve their stays online, but there is a difference in percentages between foreign and domestic travel. In international travel, online bookings are 69% while in domestic travel only 39%.
