The summer of 2024 was particularly hot for short-term rentals in Europe.
According to Eurostat data, in the quarter July-September 2024, short-term rentals in almost all European countries recorded double-digit percentage growth in overnight stays via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor platforms.
In Greece, this summer quarter saw an increase of 14.3% compared to the summer quarter of 2023, with 26,126,826 overnight stays.
In the third quarter of 2024 (compared to the same quarter of 2023), the highest growth rates in the EU were observed in Malta (+40.9%), Germany (+26.0%) and Sweden (+24.6%).
France, Spain and Italy follow with growth rates of 23.8%, 20.2% and 15.5% respectively.
In the third quarter of 2024, the total number of nights spent in short-term rental accommodation in the EU exceeded b (always through the 4 platforms mentioned above). This figure represents an increase of 18% compared to the same period in 2023.
All 3 months of the third quarter of 2024 recorded increases:
July 2024 recorded 135 million overnight stays, an increase of 16.4% compared to July 2023.
August recorded 152.2 million overnight stays (+21.6% compared to August 2023).
September recorded 79 million overnight stays (+14% compared to September 2023).

Malta recorded biggest increase in August
In August, Malta (+41.4% compared with August 2023) registered the highest increase in the number of nights spent. It was followed by Germany (+32.7%) and France (+29.9%).
On the other hand, the smallest increases were registered in Croatia (+9.7%), Bulgaria (+12.2%) and Slovenia (+13.6%).
Greece saw an increase of 16% this month.
Most popular regions in Europe in the second quarter
The most popular region for short-term rentals in the second quarter of 2010 was Andalusia in Spain (10.9 million nights), followed by Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (8.3 million nights) and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in France (7.5 million nights).
Among the top 20 regions, Spain and France had 6 each, Italy 5, Portugal 2 and Croatia 1.
Note that according to the agreement between Eurostat and the 4 platforms, the monthly regional data are published 3 months after the national data. Therefore, while the content above refers to data up to September 2024, the regional data refer to the period up to June 2024.
