Short-term rentals continued to record strong growth<\/strong> in Europe in the second quarter of 2026, with Greece ranking among the countries with the strongest performances. According to Eurostat<\/strong> data, a total of 258.8 million overnight stays were recorded in the European Union during the April-June period in accommodation booked through the three major online platforms Airbnb, Booking and Expedia.<\/p>\n

This figure is up 5.3%<\/strong> compared with the second quarter of 2025, confirming that demand for short-term rental accommodation continues to rise, despite the already high level of activity recorded in previous years.<\/p>\n

Particularly significant is the performance<\/strong> of Greece. Overnight stays booked through these platforms in the country increased by 8.3% year-on-year, a rate notably higher than the EU average.<\/p>\n

With this performance, Greece is among the countries with the strongest growth in Europe, recording the same growth rate as Estonia and Norway. In fact, among the seven countries that recorded the highest number of overnight stays through platforms \u2014 France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal and Poland \u2014 Greece posted the second-highest increase<\/strong>, behind only Poland.<\/p>\n

Greece stands out among major tourism markets<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The comparison with the other major tourism markets in Europe highlights<\/strong> even more clearly the momentum of the Greek market.<\/p>\n

In Poland, overnight stays increased<\/strong> by 8.9%, in Greece by 8.3% and in Italy by 8.1%. Germany followed with 6.5%, France with 6.2%, Portugal with 2.6% and Spain with just 1.9%.<\/p>\n

Thus, while Greece is already one of Europe\u2019s most important destinations for short-term rentals, the data show that demand has not stopped growing. On the contrary, during the second quarter of 2026 the country recorded a growth rate significantly higher<\/strong> than that of several competing tourism markets.<\/p>\n

This picture is especially important, as the figures concern overnight stays that were actually spent<\/strong>, and not merely searches, bookings or available listings. They therefore largely reflect the real tourism activity directed toward accommodation offered through the major online platforms.<\/p>\n

Malta at +25% \u2013 Where the largest increases were recorded<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The increase, however, was not uniform<\/strong> across Europe.<\/p>\n

The strongest performance in the second quarter of 2026 was recorded by Malta, with an increase of 25%, followed by Slovakia with 17%, Slovenia with 12.9% and Romania with 11.4%.<\/p>\n

A significant increase<\/strong> was also recorded in Czechia (9.3%), Poland (8.9%), Lithuania (8.8%), Greece, Estonia and Norway (8.3%), Italy and Latvia (8.1%) and Finland (8%).<\/p>\n

Greece, therefore, is not simply above the European average. It is among the leading group of European markets in terms of the growth rate<\/strong> of overnight stays.<\/p>\n

European demand for short-term rentals remains resilient<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The overall picture emerging from Eurostat<\/strong> data is that of a market that continues to grow.<\/p>\n

Of the 258.8 million overnight stays recorded in the second quarter, most countries posted an increase compared with one year earlier. Only four markets recorded a decline:<\/strong> Iceland (-4.5%), Austria (-3%), Cyprus (-2.4%) and Hungary (-2%).<\/p>\n

This picture suggests that demand for short-term accommodation through the major platforms remains strong<\/strong> and is spreading across a wide range of European destinations.<\/p>\n

At the same time, data for the first quarter of 2026 show that activity is not limited exclusively to traditional summer destinations.<\/strong> A significant number of overnight stays was recorded in major urban areas, warmer and coastal destinations, as well as winter and mountain destinations.<\/p>\n

Among the regions with particularly high activity<\/strong> were the Canary Islands and Andalusia in Spain, \u00cele-de-France and Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes in France, and Tyrol in Austria. Significant activity was also recorded in regions such as Lazio in Italy, Catalonia and Comunidad Valenciana in Spain.<\/p>\n

What the data show for Greece<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For the Greek market, the performance of the second quarter carries particular weight. The +8.3% comes at a time when Greek tourism is already at high levels<\/strong> and shows that short-term rentals continue to gain ground as an accommodation choice.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the comparison with Spain and Portugal \u2014 two of Greece\u2019s main competitors in the Mediterranean \u2014 is telling: the increase in overnight stays in Greece was many times higher<\/strong> than the corresponding increase in Spain (+1.9%) and Portugal (+2.6%).<\/p>\n

Eurostat data therefore show that the rise of European tourism is also translating into a real increase<\/strong> in the use of short-term rental accommodation, with Greece standing at the forefront of this trend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
