Messinia has gained strong international recognition<\/strong>, but this momentum needs planning, infrastructure and rules in order to benefit the entire region, notes POX President Giannis Chatzis<\/strong>, in an article published in \u201cEleftheria Messinias.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he notes, the region has natural environment, history, culture, gastronomy and local production that can support<\/strong> a high-quality and multifaceted tourism product. This prospect concerns Messinia as a whole, from Kalamata and Pylos to Methoni, Trifylia and the Messinian Mani.<\/p>\n

The challenge of extending<\/strong> the season<\/h2>\n

According to Giannis Chatzis, a key priority is the extension<\/strong> of the tourism season. He argues that an area with such a rich natural, cultural and gastronomic heritage cannot depend on just a few weeks of high demand.<\/p>\n

As he points out, there are conditions<\/strong> for greater activity in spring and autumn, through systematic promotion and the development of different forms of tourism.<\/p>\n

Infrastructure and accessibility<\/h2>\n

He places particular emphasis on accessibility.<\/strong> The upgrade of Kalamata Airport, as he notes, is a necessary condition for the next day, while improvements to the road network are also needed so that tourist traffic can be distributed more easily throughout Messinia.<\/p>\n

In his article, he also notes that international connections show that there is demand<\/strong> and that infrastructure needs to keep pace with this development.<\/p>\n

Short-term rentals and an equal framework<\/h3>\n

Regarding short-term rentals, the POX president reiterates the Federation\u2019s position in favor of an equal<\/strong> framework of obligations, full registration, transparency and effective controls.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he notes that where pressures on the housing market are documented, targeted measures<\/strong> to restrict short-term rentals of homes should be considered, with the aim of protecting housing, social cohesion and the sustainability of destinations.<\/p>\n

The connection with the primary sector<\/h3>\n

Giannis Chatzis also highlights the connection between tourism and the primary sector<\/strong>. Olive oil, local products, the Mediterranean diet and gastronomy, as he notes, are part of Messinia\u2019s identity and can create greater added value for the local economy.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he makes special reference to the international promotion of the region through \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d<\/strong> by Christopher Nolan. As he notes, the filming brought Messinia before a large international audience, while the set-jetting<\/strong> trend could increase interest in Pylos, Voidokilia, Methoni and the wider area.<\/p>\n

\u201cMessinia does not need to search for its identity. It already has one,\u201d<\/strong> he stresses in his article, noting that the goal is to invest in it with planning, modern infrastructure, rules and synergies, so that international recognition can be transformed into a longer tourism season and greater value for the region.<\/p>\n
