According to a district official, the new rules are expected to affect more than <strong>half of the short-term rental accommodations<\/strong> currently operating in Shinjuku.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Complaints increased by 40%<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Shinjuku is one of Tokyo\u2019s most important <strong>tourist and commercial destinations<\/strong>, with a vibrant nightlife and thousands of visitors every day. At the same time, however, it has a large permanent population, which is increasingly complaining about the impact of tourism activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">According to local authorities, complaints about holiday accommodations <strong>increased by around 40%<\/strong> in the fiscal year that ended in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Among the most common <strong>complaints<\/strong> are improper disposal of rubbish, smoking in areas where it is prohibited, as well as excessive noise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cAs the number of <strong>private hospitality businesses increases<\/strong>, complaints and problems associated with them have also increased,\u201d said a <strong>Shinjuku official<\/strong> to AFP, on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Almost 10% of Japan\u2019s short-term rentals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The area is home to <strong>almost 10%<\/strong> of the approximately 42,000 short-term rental accommodations operating in Japan, making the issue particularly <strong>important<\/strong> for local authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The planned ban is part of Japan\u2019s broader effort to address the effects of so-called <strong>\u201covertourism,\u201d<\/strong> as the country continues to welcome an increasing number of visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is not limited to Tokyo.
