{"id":37679,"date":"2026-04-14T17:07:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bnbnews.gr\/?p=37679"},"modified":"2026-04-14T17:12:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:12:35","slug":"tourism-eu-targets-overtourism-shift-towards-less-saturated-destinations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bnbnews.gr\/en\/legislation\/37679\/tourism-eu-targets-overtourism-shift-towards-less-saturated-destinations\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourism: EU targets overtourism \u2013 Shift towards less \u201csaturated\u201d destinations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"103\" data-end=\"314\">The European Union is moving towards a major shift in European tourism policy, as lawmakers have approved a new strategy aimed at tackling <strong>overtourism<\/strong> and redistributing visitors to <strong>less well-known destinations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"316\" data-end=\"534\">The proposal was approved on March 18, 2026 by the European Parliament\u2019s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) with 33 votes in favour, 4 against and 4 abstentions, and is expected to go to a plenary vote in April.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1ut00d3\" data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"585\">Overtourism: pressure on popular destinations<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"753\">EU lawmakers note that 80% of travellers concentrate in just 10% of destinations, placing severe pressure on iconic locations such as Venice, Santorini and Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"909\">Key challenges include overcrowding, environmental degradation, infrastructure strain, rising housing costs, and a shift towards alternative destinations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"1138\">The new strategy proposes redirecting tourist flows towards <strong>rural areas, mountain destinations<\/strong>, and <strong>remote and emerging regions<\/strong>, aiming to ease pressure on major cities while strengthening local economies in less-visited areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1140\" data-end=\"1392\">It also places strong emphasis on year-round <strong>\u201csoft tourism\u201d models<\/strong>, including gastronomic and wine tourism, cultural tourism, cycling tourism, and renewable tourism initiatives, which are expected to reduce seasonality and generate new revenue streams.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1726\">A central pillar of the strategy is improved connectivity, with measures such as the development of night train services, strengthened air, rail and maritime networks, the creation of a unified European ticketing system, and investments in electrification infrastructure, all designed to improve access to lesser-known destinations.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1nfuwu\" data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1769\">Stricter rules for short-term rentals<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"2061\">Platforms such as Airbnb are also under scrutiny, with <a href=\"https:\/\/bnbnews.gr\/en\/legislation\/35941\/short-term-rentals-in-the-eu-what-changes-with-the-regulation-from-20-may-2026\/\">new rules set to take effect from May 20, 2026<\/a>. The proposals include limits on rental days, classification of property owners, and zoning and licensing systems, aimed at protecting housing availability and maintaining social cohesion.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2200\">The EU is also considering <strong>tourism taxes<\/strong> to improve infrastructure, protect natural and cultural heritage, and support local communities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2332\">In parallel, a <strong>European \u201cskills card\u201d<\/strong> for tourism workers is being proposed to address significant labour shortages in the sector.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2451\">Tourism remains a key pillar of the European economy, accounting for 10.5% of EU GDP and more than 12.3 million jobs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2578\">However, growing demand makes it necessary to strike a balance between growth, sustainability and residents\u2019 quality of life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2762\">The proposal is not yet binding and still requires approval by the European Parliament plenary.
