It’s been a record year for cruise ships in Mykonos this year with the last of the season departing just a few days ago, marking a record year for the island in terms of cruise ship traffic.
2023 recorded 749 cruise ship arrivals to the island, with more than 1.19 million passengers, while 2024 exceeded expectations with 768 arrivals and more than 1.29 million passengers.
According to a statement by the president of the Port Fund, Ath. Kousathanas – Megas, “these impressive results demonstrate the continuous development of Mykonos as a top destination and reflect the effective strategy of the Municipality and the Port Fund for managing arrivals and improving the services provided.”
He stressed that “a decisive role in reducing pressure on local infrastructure by better distribution of ships during the week, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable experience for visitors. At the same time, the enhanced infrastructure and the increased promotion of the local cultural and gastronomic identity had a positive impact on the island’s economy and strengthened the authentic image of Mykonos.”
Improving connectivity
One of the most important projects being implemented is the creation of four new berths for boats in the area below the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos.
The project is expected to improve connectivity between the new and old ports in Mykonos, facilitating the movement of visitors from cruise ships and ensuring faster and more efficient service.
Another record year ahead?
Regarding the future prospects of the cruise industry, the President of the Port Fund said that “2024 marked the successful effort to extend the cruise season, which from 2025 will cover the period from February to December. This strategy ensures a greater dispersion of arrivals and reduces pressure during the high season, contributing to the sustainability of the destination.
