From June 11, the cost of the Schengen visa is changing. Applicants of the Visa will now have to pay 12% more. The fees for the new visa will be €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12.
But these are not the only changes, as from this month the requirement of travel insurance also becomes mandatory, as defined by Regulation 810/2009 of the European Parliament.
Who is required to buy it?
For travelers seeking a Schengen visa for tourism, business travel, study, visiting relatives or friends, among other reasons, the purchase is essential as failure to purchase it will result in their visa application being rejected.
According to the current European Union (EU) law, the Schengen visa travel insurance policy must cover at least €30,000 of medical expenses, including emergency treatment, hospitalisation and medical transportation.
The contract must cover the entire period of stay in the zone, whether the stay lasts only one day or a maximum of 90 days.
Who is exempt from Schengen visa travel insurance?
UK travelers are the only ones allowed visa-free entry into the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 190-day period. In conclusion it is not compulsory for Britons to buy travel insurance.
