An Airbnb host in Greece was struck down as he found that a guest charged him with a 3,500 euro bill on his phone. The tenant was Chinese and stayed in his property for a week. The Chinese man, even though Airbnb did not have a landline phone, decided to connect his own device to the router and it seems that he also communicated with his very distant relatives who were in China for a week. Similar phenomena are constantly multiplying with victims of landlords who are running to make ends meet with the companies that manage the short-term rental property platforms and telephony – internet providers! The Panhellenic Federation of Property Owners (POMIDA) and the Panhellenic Association of Property Managers (PASYDA) have been the recipients of many such complaints from victims-hosts who do not know what to do with the debts left by their guests. In any case, the expenses that the host is now required to pay are very high and such a dept is impossible to manage. These charges are made by guests coming from outside the European Union, for which telephone calls are subject to roaming charges. The complaints so far refer to tourists from Japan, China, Hong Kong, the Arab Emirates, etc.
Telephone: Tips for Airbnb owners
Internet via mobile telephony or deactivation of fixed telephony use by the router are the two main protection measures proposed by the two operators in order to protect owners. At the same time, property owners can also look for an Internet connection package for short-term rental stays which will ensure that guests will not be able to make telephone calls. POMIDA recommends mobile internet packages (5G and 4G). It has even entered into an agreement with a private provider to offer secure internet, not only for its members, but also for members of other organisations of owners and managers of short-term rentals. Similarly, Stama has also entered into an agreement with a telephone company, with preferential terms for its members.
