The first official reaction to the Prime Minister’s announcements at the TIF regarding Airbnb accommodation comes from Stama.
In a statement he points out the points that need careful planning on the part of the economic staff:
Announcements by the Prime Minister at the TIF
Last weekend we watched with interest the Prime Minister’s statements and press conference at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. Our conclusions can be summarised as follows: 1. we welcome the incentives for property owners: the three-year exemption from tax on rental income for those who make their properties available for long-term rental is a positive measure. The adoption of the POMIDA proposal, which we have repeatedly supported, will provide relief to the housing stock which is under pressure from a number of factors. In addition, interest-free renovation loans and the “MY HOME 2” program will make it easier for owners and citizens to improve and acquire homes respectively. The fact that it is now recognised that the main problem of the housing crisis is not caused by short-term renting, but by other important factors, is a vindication for Stama and its work. 2. Suspension of the issuance of new AMAs: the decision to suspend the issuance of new Property Registration Numbers in certain areas of Athens is excessive, as not all areas are under pressure. We suggest that the application should be done by postal code, and it is necessary that detailed information be made public by the AADE for proper and fair implementation. 3. Review of the implementation of non-issuance of new AMA: It is important to review the implementation process of non-issuance of new AMA, taking into account the change of use of property during lease. 4. Exemptions for management companies: we propose to exempt management companies from the measure as it is contrary to the free market and entrepreneurship. 5. Exclusion of commercial premises: commercial premises, such as former offices converted into accommodation, should also be excluded from the measure. 6. Increase of the climate change levy: Increasing the fee will further increase the cost of accommodation, making it more expensive. Finally, we welcome the formal recognition of the contribution of short-term rentals to the national economy and local community. Short-term rental is a healthy business activity that boosts the economy and improves the lives of citizens and local communities.
